Dispelling the Myths: Understanding Pitbulls and their True Nature

Hello everyone! October is pitbull awareness month, and this blog will be about one of the most misunderstood dog breeds.

First, my own mentor, Savannah, owns a pittie. She speaks highly of the breed. As for my own experiences with pitbulls, an older lady in our neighborhood owns a tan and white one, who is the sweetest thing. Whenever I see her, I ask about the dog.

Why, might you ask, are these breeds hated so much? It’s all a stereotype. People think that large, powerful dogs automatically turn into angry dogs that willfully attack everyone, the canine version of “shoot on sight.” However, this is extremely, extremely rare. There’s an old military saying, “There are no bad soldiers, only bad generals.” I adopted(pun intended) this to fit misunderstood and hated canines. “There are no bad dogs, only bad owners.” In fact, pitbulls make amazing family dogs. I’ve seen quite a few pitbulls and other stereotypical “attack” dogs here and none have been the slightest bit angry with us, only scared.

Also, due to this status, pitbulls are the #1 euthanized dog in America. They have up to a 93 percent euthanasia rate in shelters. Also, out of the 1.2 million dogs euthanized each year in America, about 40 percent are pitbulls. This depressing statistic has led to many rescue groups dedicated to these kinds of dogs. Another sad fact is that due to a single attack in the 1980s, Miami-Dade County has made pitbulls illegal. This has devastated dog owners.

However, you can help! You can adopt a pitbull from a shelter, or if that’s too much, even a small donation to any rescue group would go a long way.

To end this blog, I’m Ethan, it is pitbull awareness month, and most importantly, never judge a dog by their cover!
